Proposal of integral management of a reservoir
Abstract
The behavior of some chemical and physical parameters, phytoplankton gross primary production (GPP), and organic matter destruction were determined in different zones of Jimaguayú reservoir in Camagüey, Cuba, i. e., near the dam in the deepest zone, in the middle and in the river, during its outflow-inflow cycle. In the first sampling, once the reservoir was emptied, a decrease in water quality was observed due to the inflow of organic wastes from the river. Two months later, the registered data were similar to those estimated before the outflow. According transparence values (0,3-0,7 m), nitrites (0,1-1,5 mg/L), phosphates (1,3-3,3 mg/L) and GPP (4,78-5,11 g C/m2/day), this reservoir could classified as hypereutrophic. A number of management measures are suggested according to the reservoir features
