Genetic parameters of pre-weaning growth and the behavior test of the male Cebu Cubano Blanco
Abstract
We used the information of 1548 Cebu Cubanos Blancos male calves born between July 1981 and June 1996 in the Genetic Company "Rescue of Sanguily" of the Province of Camagüey with the objective of determining, from birth to 18 months of age, the influence of genetic factors; Stallion and stallion lines; and the environmental ones; flocks, numbers of births, time (bimester) and year of birth with the bimester interaction by year of birth. The traits studied were weight at birth (PN), weight at weaning (PD), average daily gain at weaning (GMDD) in the preweaning stage; final weight (PF), total gain (GTP), daily weight gain (GPD) and weight by age (PPE) in the behavior test. The data were analyzed using a linear model by the least squares method (HARVEY, 1987). The heritabilities were estimated for each trait studied, as well as the genetic, phenotypic and environmental correlations. The best weights at birth were reached between 1981 and 1984 and the worst from 1989 to 1996. The animals born in the March-April bimester in the period between 1981 and 1984 had the best weights and average daily gain at weaning. born between September and October 1993 to 1996. While those born in March - April 1985 to 1988 were the best results of the behavioral test compared to those born from September to October 1993 to 1996. The estimated heritabilities in the pre-weaning stage were: PN (0.49 ± 0.09); PD (0.29 ± 0.07); GMDD (0.30 ± 0.07) and for the behavior test, PF (0.72 ± 0.11); GTP (0.76 ± 0.11); GDP (0.69 ± 0.10) and PPE (0.50 ± 0.10). Genetic correlations were higher than 0.96, phenotypes were 0.85, and environmental correlations were 0.60, which allows the use of indirect selection with good results.
