Abstract

In order to obtain a structural model that allows making decisions to improve the organization and control of reproduction in dairy cattle systems data were collected monthly for the period January 1982 - December 2005 of six dairy cattle companies, in Camagüey province,. Total of females in reproduction (HR), inseminated cows (PENDIEN), post partum cows (RECENT), anoestrus cows (VACITOT), heifers (INCOR), culled cows (BAJAS), cows detected in the first oestrus (RECPRI) and overall oestrus (RECTOT), pregnant cows (GESTDIA) and no pregnant cows (VACDIAG) at diagnosis, and total of births (NACIM) were collected monthly. The technique SEM (structural equation modelling) was used to determine direct causal relationships of interdependence between the variables with lags related to births. The structural analysis yielded a fitted model in which impacts of all explanatory variables were estimated considering all the effects with high reliability (high R2) that had not been previously reported in papers published in Cuba. The validity of relations with the lagged variables delayed six months: pregnant cows (0.43) and no pregnant cows at diagnosis (0.23), and nine months: in the first oestrus (0.28) and total oestrus (0.20), and inseminated (0.20) was confirmed, highlighting the impact of RECTOT10 (0.39) which is a not evident relationship in the system. The application of these results will allow making decisions to improve the organization of the reproduction in dairy cattle systems.
