Abstract

In order to determine the influence of herd structure and productive and reproductive indexes upon birth number and economic losses during the non- pregnancy period in dairy cows, the following data were collected out of the registers from five dairy production centers in Camagüey province, Cuba: breeding females, categories defining herd reproductive status and birth number over a period of time, lactation range, dry season, calving interval, and services per pregnancy. Two main components, i. e., herd reproductive status (Factor 1) and productive and reproductive indexes (Factor 2) were defined by analyzing their representative variables. Both of them accounted for the 74,47 % total variance. The total number of breeding females, age at first breeding, and puerperal cows contributed the most to Factor 1 with correlations over 0,9. These two factors were included in a linear regression analysis as variables depending on birth number and economic losses during the non-pregnancy period in cows. Factor 1 showed a higher correlation (r = 0,792) to birth number than Factor 2 (r = 0,488). The last one influenced the most on economic losses due to the importance of reproductive performance. Regression equations taking into account the main components were obtained to estimate birth number and economic losses during the non-pregnancy period in dairy cows.
