Effect of the time of delivery within the time of maximum growth of the pasture on the efficiency of milk production
Abstract
The effect of the time of delivery at the beginning of the period of maximum pasture growth was studied, on several indicators of efficiency of commercial dairy heifers that are influenced by the supply of dry matter in grazing according to the growth rates of the pasture and depending on of breastfeeding 108 heifers of Holstein x Cebu (Siboney) crosses were used in grazing. In a completely randomized design they were divided into four groups attending the four fortnights of May-June when their deliveries occurred. Appreciable differences (P <0.01) were found for the main indicators of milk production and feed supply for the fortnights of May with 170 to 180 days of grazing at this time compared to June. The production costs of kg of milk were 0.27; 0.34 and 0.38 vs 0.46 pesos for the four fortnights of May-June respectively. It is concluded that for the conditions of the study the fortnights of better behavior were those of May, with better efficiency according to the indicators evaluated.
