Reproductive behavior of the Brown Swiss breed
Abstract
The records of 576 deliveries of cows of the Brown Swiss breed with ages from 28 to 115 months, occurred between the years 1996 and 2003 were used in five dairy farms of the Los Pinos Genetic Farm of the Triangle Triangle Cattle Company of the municipality of Camagüey, in conditions of grazing and traditional breeding of the calf, with weaning between 6 and 8 months and manual milking once a day. The objective was to determine the effect of the stallion and the non-genetic effects: sex of the offspring, dairy, number of births, time, year and age of the mother at birth, on the reproductive traits. For the statistical analysis of the results, a linear model was used by the least squares method (SPSS, 2001), estimating the mean and its standard errors, for the service period (PS) 188.3 ± 4.5, labor-delivery interval (IPP) 474.1 ± 4.6, gestation duration (DG) 285.8 ± 1.2 days respectively and gestation service (S / G) 1.7 ± 0.02 inseminations performed. The genetic effect of the stallion and the non-genetic, of the dairy and the year of delivery, significantly affected (P <0.01) the period of service and labor-delivery interval. The duration of gestation and gestation service were not affected by any of the genetic and non-genetic effects. The coefficients of determination obtained are low.
