Description of the dairy production units of the basin Camaguey-Jimaguayú, Cuba
Abstract
90 dairy farms (dairy production units) were studied during the years 1996 to 2003, belonging to the basic cooperative production units of the Triangle 1 and Triangle 5 companies, located in the Ji- maguayú municipality and the Triangle 3 company of the municipality of Camaguey in the province of Camaguey, Cuba. It was concluded that during the period 1996-2002 the general indicators of milk production, salary and total expenses as well as the biological, economic and social efficiency of milk production and mortality improved. The most important variables per year that can be used as a guide to determine the subsequent classification are determined. Four main components were determined in each year with a satisfactory proportion of the total variance, where the first two main components explain in each year more than 44% of the total variance. The first main component (level of operations and efficiency) was always formed in the years analyzed by total annual salary and expenses and per hectare, by the level of annual production and by the expressions of economic and biological efficiency. The second main component (stock of the herd in the operational area) with a stable contribution of the total area, the number of cows and mortality, while the third and fourth components were time-varying factors, although associated with births per hectare and mortality and the milk price variable, respectively.
