Genetic and environmental influences on birth weight in Cebu Bermejo Cuban
Abstract
Data registered for 1 636 female and male Cuban bright reddish Zebu calves born from 1991 to 2000 were ana- lyzed to determine the influence of offspring sex (2), birth year (10), birth months (12), sires (13), and cow’s age at calving (150) upon calf weight at birth. Data were processed by a linear pattern arranged according to the least squares method (SPSS, 1999). General media values and standard deviations were discussed for each studied trait. Offspring sex, sires, birth year and months taken as a regression parameter significantly affected ( P< 0,01) calf weight at birth. General media values and standard deviations for each trait in male and female calves were 29,10 ±
1,59a and 28,50 ± 1,40b. The highest weight at birth was registered in 1999 and the lowest in 1993. Animals born in September showed a higher weight at birth compared to those born in March, which showed a lower weight. Sires 1, 3, 4, 8 and 9 showed the most suitable weight for this trait; however, sire 5 was the most unsuitable. Determinant co- efficient proved low in its value.
