Southeast growth of white Cuban Cebu
Abstract
Data from 9 906 male and female Cuban White Zebu calves born from 1988 to 2001 and in their pre-weaning stage were dis- cussed to determine the influence of several environmental factors, such as offspring sex, herd, calving number, bimonthly calving time, and calving years per cow upon a number of traits, i. e., birth weight (BW), weaning weight (WW), and average daily gain at weaning (ADG). Data were analyzed by a linear pattern according to the least squares method. General average values and stan- dard deviations for each trait were estimated. The highest values for BW were found from 1988 to 1994, and the lowest values from 1995 to 2001. Calves born from September to October showed higher WW and ADG values in comparison to those born in March and up to April; in contrast, better BWs were detected in January and February while worse BWs were found in May and June. General average values and standard deviations for each trait in males and females were 28,60 ± 1,62 kg and 28,21 ± 1,62 kg (BW); 163,73 ± 28,13 kg and 157,90 ± 24,56 kg (WW); 660 ± 140 g and 630 ± 120 g (ADG), respectively. Determinant coeffi- cients were below standard values for each trait.
