Preliminary evaluation of the seasonality in the characteristics of the Siboney bull ejaculate from Cuba
Abstract
Seasonality effect upon ejaculation characteristics and its relation to Siboney de Cuba bulls production indexes was determined. To this regards, 928 collected semen registers corresponding to the whole productive period of three sires from the Artificial Insemination Center in Camagüey province, Cuba, were used. The production variables were: collected semen volume, motility, density, and millions of nemasperms per millilitre of fresh semen, dilution, produced semen dose subjective motility, and final semen dosis. The effects of semen collection by year and month on the production variables were evaluated by a time series analysis, in which season was taken as the number of months (12) during seven years. Despite of season effect upon the ejaculate volume and the production indexes related to this volume (dilution, diluted ejaculate volume, produced dosis, and final dosis) a general pattern was not established because sires 2 and 3 showed similar tendencies in January and from March to July but sire 1 only adjusted to this pattern in May and July. This result could be used to characterize each sire production along its productive period. It is recommended to carry out a number of studies to establish the existence of a pattern for the seasonal performance of the evaluated variables.
