Multivariate approach to the main factors that influence the postpartum reproductive behavior of the dairy cow in the conditions of Camagüey, Cuba
Abstract
As a way to improve the understanding of the relationship among feeding, handling and reproductive behavior in dairy cows after calving, fifteen variants related to body condition, body reserve losses, season, age, calving rate, herd, calving-first service interval, service time, and calving interval were used to study 152 creole dairy cows distributed into five dairy herds in Camagüey province, Cuba. Through a principal component analysis three factors were obtained. These factors were included in univariant and multivariant covariance analyses. The first analysis showed that calving interval was influenced by herd and factor 1 (P<0,001), calving-first service interval by factor 1 (P<0,05), and service time by factors 1 and 2 (P<0,001). Multivariant co- variance analysis, through its univariant interpretation, ratified the initial outcome, i.e., every multivariant test pointed out post- partum reproductive behavior dependence on herd and factors 1 and 2 effects, but its independence regarding factor 3. The ana- lytical methodology applied made possible to decrease dimension to only 3 factors which supported a 75,6% of variance and improved the statistical significance of the effects. Body condition was the factor that best explained postpartum reproductive behavior, represented by service time and calving time per se or within a multivariant set. The methodology applied should be widen up to include other variants related to animal health and production level.
