Influence of the number of births and the time of the year on reproductive indicators in a pig unit
Abstract
A research to evaluate season and number of farrowings impact upon farrow size, birth and weaning weight, and farrowing time was carried out. Data from the computer electronic support of the breeding center, registering 339 farrowings of crossbred York- shire-Duroc Jersey female swines during the year 2000, were assessed. These data were analyzed through a statistical package using the least squares method. It was proved that farrow size at birth and at weaning, as well as piglets average weight at wean- ing were influenced by the number of farrowings. The highest values were registered at the third and up to the fifth farrowing. Summer had a significant positive impact upon piglets weight at birth. Neither season non farrowing affected farrowing time.
