Line Breeding and Genetic Trends for Chacuba Cattle Genotype Traits
Abstract
The aim of this study was to characterize Chacuba genotype [(♀ 5/8 Charolaise x 3/4 Cebú) (♂5/8 Charolaise x 3/4 Zebu)] growth traits according to data from the Genetics Department, Ministry of Agriculture and the Livestock Control Center from Camagüey province. Traits studied were weaning weight, female post-weaning weight at 12 and 15 months old, and weight at first breeding, as well as male final liveweight at 18 months old according to the performance test results. Statistical processing was carried out using the MTDFREMI program by Boldman et al. (1995) and the Endog Version 3.2 by Gutiérrez and Goyache (2005). Genetic trends for growth traits showed low values for weaning weight (86 g/year), female post-weaning weight at 12 months old (121 g/year) and 15 months old (116 g/year), weight at first breeding (57,6 g/year), and male final liveweight (8 g/year). The population line breeding levels also showed low values (0,58 %).
