Abstract

This research was made with the use of 40 half- breed swines ( Yorkshire x Duroc ) from both sexes belonging to the Agroindustrial Complex Camujiro in Camagüey province. They were divided into two groups: the first one was supplied with banana pseudo-stalk and the second one as a witness group. The objective was to evaluate the influence of this agricultural waste over the incidence of respiratory and digestive diseases and the final weight reached by the animals in both stages: pre-fattening and fattening. The statistical analysis was made by means of three models; MI in the first stage (pre-fattening) where the initial weight (PI) was included as a covariable, MII in the second stage where the pre-fattening final weight (PF1) was included as a covariable and MIII model, which covers the two previous stages, where the initial weight (PI) was included again as a covariable. A logistic regression with dichotomous answer was applied to diseases and an analysis was applied to the final weight in each stage. In the fattening stage the pseudo-stalk intake was not significant neither to diseases nor to the final weight; however, in the pre-fattening stage and during the total period, the treatment contributed 4 advantage odd and a significant increase of the final weight. The increase in weight of the animals that consume pseudo-stalk is considered in association with the decrease of disease incidence observed in them.
