Evaluation of postpartum fertility of dairy cattle herds in the province of Camagüey, Cuba
Abstract
Breeding cycle data registered from 2000 to 2002 at eight livestock centers in Camaguey province, Cuba, were used to assess postpartum fertility of 1404 creole Siboney milky cows from 28 herds. To this end, the relations among a number of effects like intercalving period from the previous breeding cycle, calving-first service interval, herd, and calving month and year were taken into account. A multivariant co-variance analysis was carried out including as a dependent variable to the constructo postpartum fertility composed by such factors as interestrual period, number of services per pregnancy, and service period, as well as the above mentioned effects. An acceptable behaviour of services per pregnancy was confirmed, in contrast to interestrual period and service which proved to be deficient. This means a deficit in the organization and control of the breeding activity; particularly concerning estrus detection within all the assessed population.
Every multivariant test pointed out a postpartum fertility dependence (P<0,001) on the discussed effects, showing higher correlations in the cases of calving-first service interval and herd. The analytical method applied made possible to exactly establish-through canonical correlations-the relations among the assessed effects when analyzing postpartum fertility.
