Study of the birth weight of intermediate crosses in the formation of Chacuba breed
Abstract
1,744 calves born between 1988 and 2000 were studied to characterize the behavior of intermediate crosses in the formation of the Chacuba breed [(♀5 / 8 Charloaise x ¾ Cebu) (♂5 / 8 Charloaise x ¾ Cebu)]. Some genetic factors (sex, race and childbirth) and environmental factors (time, year of birth) that influence birth weight were evaluated. The causes of variation included were: calf races (4), mother (5) and father (4); Breeding sex (2), herds (10) and number of births (10), times (6) and year of delivery (13). The general means of birth weight were 31.02 ± 2.60 kg in F1; for the ¾ Cebu x ¼ Charolaise of 34.69 ± 2.44 kg in the 5/8 Charloaise x ¾ Cebu of 36.05 ± 2.72 kg. and for Chacuba the values were 36.38 ± 2.71 kg. It was determined that the time and race showed significant difference (P <0.05), while the year, sex and herd differ with (P <0.01) in relation to the calves' birth weight.
