Factors affecting the birth weight of Cuban Creole cattle
Abstract
Genetic Center Rescate de Sanguily records of 692 calvings from 1987 up to 2000 comprising 127 female Cuban creole bo- vines with an age ranging from 2,2 to 16,6 years old were used to determine the impact of offspring sex, number of calvings, calving time (bimonthly), offspring birth year, and fresh cow age included as co-variant upon birth weight. Data were processed through Systat version 7.0 (Wilkinson, 1997) program to estimate the least squares media and its standard errors, as well as the variation coefficient for the discussed trait. Offspring sex, number of calvings, offspring birth year, and fresh cow age as regres- sion rate significantly affected (P<0,001) birth weight. Male offspring birth weight, was a 3,4% higher than female offspring birth weight and the best birth year registered was 1988. The highest weight-at-birth values were reached at third and up to the sixth calving.
