Effects of extracts of Eucalyptus saligna and Eucalyptus citriodora on the viability and fimbrial expression (K88 and CFA / I) of enterotoxigenic E. coli
Abstract
Causes provoking contradictory results concerning Eucalyptus extracts effects upon K88 fimbrial expression and viability in E. coli G7 are discussed. Eight enteric strains (seven from K88+ and one wild trait CFA/I+) were studied. Ten extracts (five decoc- tions, three infusions, and two aqueous extracts) from E. citriodora and E. saligna prepared at different concentrations were ana-
lyzed. It was confirmed that extract effect upon viability depended on Eucalyptus species, extract concentration values, and bacte- rial strain under treatment. No E. citriodora extracts affected bacterial viability. E. saligna extract effect depended on concentra- tion values. Extract inhibitory effect upon K88 depended on Eucalyptus species and extract concentration values. All extracts inhibiting K88 showed a similar effect upon CFA/I. A model to study plant extracts affecting fimbrial expression is suggested. This model does away with self-agglutination phenomena interferences and the use of electronic microscope techniques.
